Questions
What is a memory palace?
• A memory palace is a place you know well, used as a filing system for things you want to remember.
• Picture each item in a specific spot along a route through that place.
• To recall them, you walk the route in your head.
• It is also called the method of loci, & is the oldest recorded memory technique we have.
Does the memory palace technique actually work?
• Yes, and it has been tested rather than just a hollow claim.
• A 2017 study in Neuron took people with no memory training, put them through six weeks of method of loci practice, and compared them against control groups.
• Brain scans showed the trained group's activity shifting toward that of elite memory athletes, still measurable four months on.
• Every world memory champion uses some version of it.
How long does it take to memorize a poem?
• Most people build their first palace in about five minutes and can memorize a short poem the same day.
• Making it permanent takes a few short walks, spread over a few days.
Do I need to be good at visualising?
• No. This is the most common worry and the least founded.
• The app generates the picture for you, so you are recognising an image rather than conjuring one.
• If you can find your way around your own kitchen with your eyes shut, you have everything the method needs.
Can I use it for scripture, speeches, or song lyrics?
• Yes. Anything you can write down works.
• Exam answers, poetry, scripture, prayers, quotes, wedding speeches, pitches, vocabulary, and lyrics are the most common uses.
Is it free?
• There is a free tier with fifty credits and up to two palaces.
• Paid plans start at $5.99 a week.
• Credits roll over and never expire.
